The annual exodus from the capital has gained full momentum as thousands of holidaymakers thronged Kamalapur Railway Station ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Following the end of the final official working day on Monday, the station saw a massive influx of passengers that continued into Tuesday morning.
Despite the heavy crowds, a rare sense of order prevailed. Every train observed on Tuesday, March 17, departed the station at its scheduled time, providing significant relief to travelers.
The day’s journey began at 6:00 AM with the Rajshahi-bound Dhumketu Express. It was followed by the timely departures of the Nilnagar, Sundarbans, Egarosindur Prabhati, and Teesta Express.
Railway authorities have implemented a three-tier security system to manage the pressure. Strict ticket verification at the entrance has prevented unauthorized access to platforms, a move praised by passengers.
"I came early anticipating chaos, but the discipline is impressive. No one is allowed on the platform without a verified ticket," said one traveler waiting with his family.
To maintain order, "standing tickets" are being issued at prescribed fares for those unable to secure seats, ensuring everyone on board is documented. Mobile TTE Aftab confirmed that the two-stage checking process at the station gates has been instrumental in managing the flow.
While offices were open until Monday, the "main wave" of the exodus started Tuesday morning. Similar crowds were also reported at bus counters adjacent to Kamalapur. With a seven-day holiday period ahead, authorities expect this high volume of passengers to continue until the day before Eid.
