The re-excavation of the Hatiara Canal has begun in Narail Sadar Upazila as part of a nationwide programme to restore rivers, canals and reservoirs.
Minister for Cultural Affairs Nitai Roy Chowdhury inaugurated the project on Monday afternoon. The initiative will involve re-excavating about 2.5 kilometres of the canal.
Speaking at the event, the minister said the government has started implementing development commitments made in its election manifesto soon after assuming office.
The inauguration ceremony was chaired by Narail Deputy Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Abdul Salam.
Among those present were Member of Parliament from Narail-1 Biswas Jahangir Alam, MP from Narail-2 Ataur Rahman Bachchu, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Al-Mamun Sikder, and former district BNP organising secretary Shahriar Rizvi George, along with local officials and residents.
Officials said the canal restoration project is expected to improve water flow, support irrigation and help reduce waterlogging in surrounding areas.
