With Eid approaching, Gazipur, a hub of industrial and commercial activity, is witnessing a mass movement of people returning to their hometowns. Many residents are sending family members early to avoid travel stress.
On Monday night (March 16), Chandra Bus Terminal saw heavy crowds as passengers prepared for long-distance travel. The Dhaka-Tangail road, including the Chandra, Steep Pair, and Kaliakoir bypass areas, experienced increasing traffic after dark. Long queues of vehicles were reported at key checkpoints.
Most passengers are boarding buses through online ticketing, as ticket counters at Chandra Bus Terminal have been closed this year. Abdul Mannan, owner of Hanif Transport, noted that online booking has reduced the traditional crowding problems.
Some travelers expressed concern about rising fares. Transport operators explained that fuel shortages and higher oil prices have increased travel costs. Passengers like Sulaiman Mia reported comfortable journeys despite slightly higher fares.
Transport officials said early departures are helping reduce congestion. Shyamoli Transport driver Rahmat Ali Akand noted full buses on routes from Gabtali to Chandra, reflecting high demand.
To ensure safety, Gazipur’s Naojor Highway Police, led by Officer-in-Charge Saugatul Alam, has deployed additional personnel. Several control towers have been set up to monitor traffic, and over 300 officers are involved in maintaining law and order on major routes.
Authorities urge passengers to follow safety protocols, travel early, and use online booking to avoid congestion during the Eid rush.
