A mother and her three daughters were brutally hacked to death at their rented home in Raipur municipality Laxmipur on Thursday morning. The primary suspect was subsequently killed in a mob lynching.
The victims are Shahinur Begum, 38 and her daughters: Dhaka University student Saima Akhter, 21 college student Iqra Akhter, 17 and nine-year-old Shifa Akhter. Shahinur had resided there with her children since her husband died in an electrical accident several years ago.
Locals apprehended the suspected attacker, identified as Antar Majumdar a fruit seller who previously lived in the same building. An angry mob severely beat him before law enforcement arrived. Six to seven police officers were injured by brick-throwing while struggling to control the agitated crowd.
Police eventually rescued the critically injured suspect and transported him to Laxmipur District Sadar Hospital where Resident Medical Officer Dr. Arup Pal later confirmed his death.
Raipur Upazila Health Officer Baharul Alam stated that the mother and two daughters died from severe sharp weapon wounds before or shortly after reaching the local hospital. The third daughter succumbed to her injuries while being transferred to Dhaka.
Laxmipur District Superintendent of Police Abu Tarek visited the crime scene to assess the situation. "Four family members were killed, and the suspected youth died after being beaten by the mob. The exact motive behind this horrific crime remains unknown. Further details will be revealed following a thorough investigation," he stated.
