A student was injured in a fire caused by a gas leak from a cooking stove at Dolonchapa Hall of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU).
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, November 7, in Room 307, located at the northeastern corner of the hall’s third floor.
The injured student is from the Department of Philosophy and belongs to the 2022-23 academic session.
According to the student, the flames suddenly intensified while she was cooking on the gas stove. As she rushed to escape, she injured her right hand, suffering a dislocation of a joint. She was later treated at Trishal Upazila Health Complex.
The fire reportedly continued for around 10 minutes before being brought under control with the help of Ansar members assigned to the hall.
A technician who arrived to repair the stove after the incident said he detected a gas leak at the main valve. He suspected that the leak had occurred because several components of the stove had become worn out.
When contacted, Hall Provost and Associate Professor of the Department of English Language and Literature Umme Farhana said she was not on campus when the incident took place and had learned about it from the house tutors.
“As I was not on campus at the time of the incident, I learned about it from the house tutors. I am unable to provide the latest information. Please contact the relevant officials currently on campus,” she said.
University Proctor Dr Mahbubur Rahman Jony said gas had been leaking through the stove’s main valve.
“After receiving the information, we sent a technician, who stopped the leak,” he said.
