Police in Faridpur District say they have solved the widely discussed murder of Raju Sheikh, arresting eight suspects and recovering several weapons used in the attack.
Superintendent of Police Md. Nazrul Islam disclosed the details at a press conference held at the Faridpur Superintendent of Police office on Monday afternoon.
According to police, the attack took place on March 2 around 9:30 pm in the Station Fish Market area of Guhalakshipur in Faridpur city. Raju Sheikh, 36, was hacked by a group of assailants in front of a meat shop.
Locals rescued him and rushed him to the trauma centre of Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where he died around 11 pm the same night.
Following the incident, the victim’s mother Chobi Khatun filed a murder case with Faridpur Kotwali Police Station, naming 10 suspects and several unidentified individuals.
During the investigation, police said the victim was allegedly involved in the drug trade and had multiple cases filed against him. According to investigators, family disputes had intensified in recent months.
Police said tensions between Raju and his younger brother Ibrahim Sheikh had escalated after a stabbing incident about eight to nine months earlier. Investigators believe the brother later planned the killing following further conflict.
According to police, several accomplices, including Hridoy, Shakib, Rabiul and Maruf, took part in the plan.
On the night of the incident, they reportedly lured Raju to the Station Fish Market area and started an argument over drugs. At one stage, one suspect grabbed him from behind while others attacked him with sharp weapons. Believing him dead, the attackers fled the scene.
Police later arrested eight suspects, including Amit Roy, Nur Islam, Meherun Nesa and Hridoy, during separate operations. Some were detained in the Sathia Upazila area of Pabna District, while others were arrested in Faridpur.
In a follow-up operation early Monday, police recovered five weapons believed to have been used in the attack—four machetes and a steel knife. The weapons were found hidden under leaves near a railway line close to Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque in the Habeli Gopalpur area.
SP Nazrul Islam said police used technology and confidential information to identify and arrest those involved.
“The main planners and suspects in the murder have been arrested. Operations are continuing to detain others connected to the case,” he said.
Additional Superintendent of Police Fahima Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Shamsul Azam and Additional Superintendent of Police Ajmir Hossain were also present at the press briefing.
