Two leading apparel trade bodies the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) have demanded the cancellation or suspension of a provision banning knit fabric imports under the new Import Policy Order 2026–2029.
In separate letters to the Ministry of Commerce, both associations pointed to Sub-clause 12 of Clause 25 which states that knit fabrics are ineligible for import, and requested its immediate withdrawal, citing risks to the competitiveness of the export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) sector.
In a letter dated September 1, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said international buyers' demands constantly evolve, requiring product diversification, specific quality standards, custom designs and fast delivery. Meeting these requirements often means sourcing particular fabric varieties from overseas, since specialised grades, colours, textures and designs are frequently unavailable locally. Restricting imports, he warned that it could disrupt normal factory operations.
BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem echoed the call also noting that various imported knit fabrics have already arrived at Chittagong Port and are being stored in the open while many exporters have completed import formalities. He warned that the new restriction would create serious complications in clearing these shipments and fulfilling scheduled export orders.
Hatem added that the restriction compounds existing pressures on factories already struggling with production disruptions caused by ongoing gas shortages.
Both trade bodies urged the government to act swiftly to prevent further damage to the sector's operations and export commitments.
