Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has warned that certain political parties and individuals are exploiting the country's current problems to spread confusion and push Bangladesh toward anarchy.
Speaking at a discussion marking BNP's 48th founding anniversary at the Bangladesh Krishibid Institution, he acknowledged existing problems but said his government was working to resolve issues inherited from the previous autocratic regime and the interim government.
"The people have entrusted us with running the country. We will uphold democratic principles and ethics" he said, warning that the law would deal firmly with anyone attempting to create unrest. He urged all parties to act within reasonable limits.
Rahman apologised on behalf of BNP to citizens and industry owners suffering from electricity and fuel shortages also adding that the party was drafting a plan to prevent future fuel crises.
He suggested that individuals who stayed hidden during the previous autocratic rule might now be instigating unrest to help bring the ousted regime back to power, citing a recent statement from a member of the so-called "Gupta" group as evidence.
Rahman paid tribute to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and crediting them with restoring multiparty democracy with developing the garment industry, promoting women's education and introducing the caretaker government system.
He credited ordinary citizens as the driving force behind the 2024 movement, saying BNP had fought to make it successful.
Senior BNP leaders including Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Mirza Abbas and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury attended the event.
