BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has declared that there will be no party or government interference in upcoming local government elections, directing leaders to nominate candidates capable of winning popular support through direct public engagement.
Speaking at an organizational meeting at a hotel in Chattogram on Tuesday night, Tarique Rahman addressed nearly 500 party leaders and activists from the metropolitan, north, and south district units.
Local government elections are approaching,Tarique Rahman told the attendees. Just as the public placed their trust in us previously, we must secure the support of common citizens in these local polls as well. The government and the party will not influence the elections as seen in the past.
He urged prospective candidates to immediately step up engagement with local communities and demonstrate commitment to public service.
Outlining key organizational priorities, the BNP chief asked party members to actively assist in improving law and order and combating local crime, drug abuse, and extortion.
I ask two things from you," he emphasized. You must contribute at any cost to maintaining peace and order in your respective areas according to the public's expectations not personal preferences. The strength of a political party lies in the people.
Reflecting on the nation's political landscape, Tarique Rahman highlighted the severe sacrifices made by party grassroots over 17 years of autocratic rule, enduring false cases, persecution, and street movement. He noted that the BNP built broad social consensus, laying the groundwork for the student-led mass uprising in 2024.
He acknowledged that rebuilding key state sectors including the economy, healthcare, and education remains a complex challenge, requiring coordinated administrative and political efforts to recover from past destruction.
Key party leaders present at the meeting included Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, MP Sayeed Al Noman, and MP Abu Sufian, alongside regional executive members.
