The US Department of Defense, known as the Pentagon, is deploying the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East, Fox News reported on Tuesday, citing US officials.
Earlier, on October 1, a US official told The Jerusalem Post that an aircraft carrier and a unit of US Marines would be sent to the operational area of US Central Command (CENTCOM).
At the time, The Jerusalem Post reported that the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group had also departed San Diego. The group includes the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
According to Fox News, the carrier strike group is expected to arrive in the Middle East by the end of November.
Two other US aircraft carriers are currently deployed in the region: the USS George H.W. Bush, which arrived in April, and the USS George Washington, which arrived in August to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln.
However, the US Naval Institute's news outlet, USNI News, reported that the USS Theodore Roosevelt was moving towards CENTCOM's area of operations to relieve the USS George Washington.
Meanwhile, the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group is deployed in the Arabian Sea. It is accompanied by the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the USS Portland and USS Comstock.
