Police recovered the floating body of a 23-year-old college student from the Kumar River near the Madankhali sluice gate in Bhatilakshmipur on Tuesday the two days after he went missing during Durga Puja festivities.
The deceased was identified as Kaushik Saha Jitu, an undergraduate second-year Chemistry student at Government Rajendra College and son of Kamlesh Saha from the city's Wirelesspara area.
According to police, local residents spotted the body floating in the river on Tuesday morning and dialed the national emergency hotline 999. River Police and Kotwali Police Station officers retrieved the body from the site. Family members later identified Kaushik by his clothing and a set of keys found on him.
Kaushik had been missing since Sunday evening when he left home to visit a local Puja pavilion. After unsuccessful search efforts, his father filed a General Diary (GD) with Kotwali Police Station on Monday.
Sub-Inspector Masud Hossain noted that initial identification was difficult due to the body being bloated from decomposition.
Additional Superintendent of Police Ajmir Hossain confirmed that the body was sent to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Law enforcement teams have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
