Tarique Rahman Has a Vision for Bogura’s Development: Press Secretary Ruman

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has a distinct vision for Bogura’s development and wants the northern district to progress alongside the rest of Bangladesh, his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman has said.

Calling for collective efforts to realise the vision, Ruman said coordinated action by political leaders, professionals, businesses and local residents would be essential to establishing Bogura as a major centre for economic growth, education, transport and industry.

He made the remarks at a discussion on Bogura’s development prospects, problems and challenges on Thursday.

“The prime minister has a plan for what Bogura should become,” Ruman said.

The discussion was organised by national daily Bangladesh Pratidin at the Momo Inn Convention Centre in Bogura. State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam attended as the chief guest, while Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Loton Ekram chaired the event. Railway, airport and urban infrastructure plans Mir Shahe Alam outlined several major development initiatives intended to strengthen Bogura’s position as a transport, industrial and economic hub.

One of the most significant proposals is the Bogura-Sirajganj railway project, estimated to cost Tk 10,570 crore. The proposed railway connection is expected to improve regional transport, facilitate passenger movement and strengthen supply chains for agricultural products and industrial goods.

The minister also said preparations for a proposed multimodal airport in Bogura had reached an advanced stage. If implemented, the facility could improve regional connectivity and support both passenger and cargo transport.

Other initiatives include a four-lane road along the Karatoa River and plans to expand major urban highways from four lanes to six lanes.

According to the minister, Tk 70 crore had been released for preliminary work aimed at easing traffic congestion and supporting urban development.

He also cited approximately Tk 1,994 crore for infrastructure development under Bogura City Corporation and a separate municipal infrastructure plan worth Tk 2,000 crore.

The status of these initiatives varies, and distinguishing proposed projects from approved allocations and actual expenditure will be important in assessing progress. Transparent implementation schedules and public reporting would help residents monitor whether the announced commitments translate into tangible improvements. Road expansion and past development concerns Ruman referred to an earlier proposal by Tarique Rahman to widen the road between Matidali and Banani to 60 feet. He said objections from residents concerned about the potential impact on shops, homes and other properties had complicated the initiative.

According to Ruman, greater public cooperation might have allowed the road to be widened to 80 or even 100 feet, providing additional capacity for future traffic.

His remarks highlighted the challenge of balancing infrastructure expansion with residents’ property rights and livelihoods. Effective public consultation, fair compensation and transparent land acquisition procedures will be important for future projects.

Ruman also criticised the pace of development in Bogura over the preceding 17 years, arguing that the district had not received sufficient investment in major educational institutions, technical training facilities and other public infrastructure.

He also questioned whether an international-standard stadium associated with initiatives by the late Arafat Rahman had fulfilled its intended potential. Sports, industry and employment The proposed Arafat Rahman Koko Para Sports Village, estimated to cost around Tk 1,000 crore, is another major initiative outlined by the state minister.

If implemented effectively, the facility could provide modern training opportunities, host sporting events and support the development of local athletes.

Industrial development is also a priority, including plans for a Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) industrial park. Such a zone could attract investment, support small and medium-sized enterprises and create employment opportunities for young people.

Bogura’s agricultural production and established commercial networks offer opportunities for agro-processing, food storage, packaging and light engineering. Reliable utilities, a skilled workforce, access to finance and environmental safeguards will be important for sustainable industrial growth. Education, healthcare and urban governance Shahe Alam said plans included strengthening Bogura University as a multidisciplinary centre for higher education and research. He also outlined a proposal to establish modern 151-bed hospitals in 13 upazilas of the district.

Expanding higher education could reduce the need for students to move to Dhaka or other major cities to pursue specialised studies. Modern upazila hospitals could also improve access to healthcare, provided they have adequate doctors, nurses, diagnostic equipment, medicines and operating budgets.

Plans for a Bogura Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and a Bogura Development Authority were also described as nearing completion. If established with clearly defined responsibilities, these institutions could improve water supply, drainage, sanitation and coordinated urban planning.

Bogura’s elevation to city corporation status in 2026 has further increased expectations for better roads, waste management, street lighting, drainage and other municipal services. The new corporation comprises 21 wards, making effective planning and equitable service delivery increasingly important. Turning announcements into results Both Ruman and Shahe Alam called for cooperation beyond political divisions to advance Bogura’s development.

The proposed railway, airport, sports village, industrial facilities, hospitals and educational institutions could strengthen the district’s economic prospects. However, their success will depend on project approvals, funding, timely implementation, transparent spending and effective management.

As Bogura expands, development must also benefit rural communities through improved roads, agricultural markets, public services and employment opportunities.

For residents, the ultimate measure of progress will not be the scale of investment announcements but whether projects are completed, public resources are used responsibly and living standards improve.

Bogura has long been an important commercial and agricultural centre in northern Bangladesh. Turning that potential into sustained and inclusive growth will require coordinated investment, accountable administration and long-term planning.
