Five fishermen were detained and a large quantity of illegal fishing nets seized during an operation to protect mother hilsa in the Padma River in Louhajang, Munshiganj.
The drive began on Saturday morning, October 24, in the Louhajang stretch of the Padma River. It was led by Abdus Salam Azad, a member of parliament for Munshiganj-2 and joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Louhajang Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Farzana Boby Mitu, Naval Police Officer-in-Charge Md Malek Khasru Khan and Coast Guard personnel assisted in the operation.
The drive aimed to stop illegal fishing in the river, ensure safe breeding conditions for mother hilsa and increase hilsa production. Five fishermen were detained, while a large quantity of fishing nets was seized.
Those involved in the operation said continued enforcement was necessary to implement the government’s fishing ban for the protection of mother hilsa and prevent illegal fishing in the river.
Fishermen were urged to comply with the restrictions during the hilsa breeding season.
