The Highway Police have identified 207 congestion-prone locations, or “black spots,” on national highways as part of preparations for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr travel rush.
Deputy Inspector General of Highway Police Imtiaz Ahmed said a comprehensive security and traffic management plan has been introduced to ensure smooth and safe travel during the Eid holiday.
He shared the information while visiting the Dhaka–Tangail Highway in the Chandra area of Kaliakoir Upazila in Gazipur District on Monday afternoon.
Imtiaz Ahmed said many robberies had occurred on highways last year due to limited police activity. “Taking that experience into account, we have strengthened security arrangements on highways this year,” he said.
According to the Highway Police survey, 31 of the identified congestion spots are linked to ongoing road construction or renovation work. Authorities have asked the relevant departments to complete or manage the work before Eid to reduce traffic disruption.
Another 49 congestion points are caused by temporary roadside markets and haats. Local administrations have been requested to remove these markets to ensure smoother traffic flow.
The remaining congestion spots are related to traffic management issues, including illegal parking and unregulated vehicle movement.
Imtiaz Ahmed also said strict measures are being taken against extortion, overcharging of fares and the movement of heavy vehicles such as dump trucks on highways during the busy travel period.
“Regular monitoring and operations are underway to ensure passengers and drivers can travel safely and comfortably,” he added.
He warned that no irregularities would be tolerated on highways during the Eid travel period. If complaints of extortion or excessive fares are confirmed, legal action will be taken against those responsible.
During the visit, Superintendent of Police Sharif Uddin and other Highway Police officials were present.
