The re-excavation work of the Nabar Canal has begun in Paikgachha Upazila of Khulna District under an irrigation development project of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).

The inauguration ceremony was held on Monday at Nabar Beel. President of the BADC Officers Association and Head of Monitoring of BADC Md. A. Chattar Gazi attended the event as the chief guest and formally launched the excavation work.

The programme was chaired by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury.

Among the special guests were Nahidul Islam, Senior Assistant Director of the Boalia Seed Production Farm of BADC; Upazila Agriculture Officer Ekramul Hossain; Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Saikat Mallick; and Assistant Engineer of BADC’s Khulna Zone Zahid Hasan.

The programme was moderated by Sheikh Mehedi Hasan and attended by local officials, community leaders, journalists and farmers.

Officials said the project involves re-excavation of a 1,260-metre section of the Nabar Canal from the Haria River in Bhairabghata mouza of Kapilmuni Union.

The work is being carried out by a Jessore-based contractor, Sagar Enterprise.

Authorities said that once completed, the project is expected to reduce waterlogging in nearby wetlands including Noakati Beel, Nabar Beel, Hauli Beel and Dhonar Beel. It will also improve irrigation, ensure normal water flow and help increase agricultural production and fish cultivation in the area.
