Speculation peaks as the Norwegian Nobel Committee prepares to announce the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on Friday. This year's award marks the 125th anniversary of the world's most prestigious honor.
The committee received nominations for 287 candidates including 73 organizations. Prominent contenders predicted by experts include the International Space Station, emergency aid teams in Sudan, children's advocates in Ukraine and major international courts. Former Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also drawn interest in prediction markets while U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for the award.
The peace prize selection typically prioritizes long-term contributions to international fraternity, conflict reduction and the promotion of democratic institutions.
The announcement concludes a week of Nobel honors. Earlier awards recognized scientific breakthroughs in medicine, physics and chemistry while Canadian author Anne Carson received the Literature Prize. The Prize in Economic Sciences will follow on Monday. Each prize includes a award of 12 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million).
