The US military plans to livestream the upcoming firing squad execution of former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan on December 3 at Fort Hood, Texas marked as an unprecedented move in modern capital punishment.
Hasan killed 13 people in a 2009 shooting at the base and was sentenced to death in 2013. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the broadcast with stating it aims to demonstrate public accountability. President Donald Trump approved the execution method following a recommendation by Hegseth.
The execution will mark the military's first firing squad execution since 1945 and its first capital punishment case since 1961. Legal scholars and anti-death penalty organizations noted that public broadcasts of legal executions remain unheard of in modern US history.
