A police academy modelled on the Sardah Police Academy will be established in Jungle Salimpur of Sitakunda, Chattogram, while Chattogram Central Jail will also be constructed nearby, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.
The minister made the remarks on Thursday (October 8) while briefing journalists at the Secretariat after a meeting on the law-and-order situation in Jungle Salimpur and the Rohingya crisis.
“We will build a police academy in Jungle Salimpur and Chattogram Central Jail nearby. Good governance will be ensured by driving out criminals from Salimpur,” he said.
According to the minister, the government has decided to establish the academy in the area and has acquired 72 acres of land for relocating Chattogram Central Jail.
The government is also planning to strengthen security around the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar. Two Army camps will be established in the hilly areas of Rangikhali and Noakhalipara under the 10 Infantry Division based in Ramu, the minister said.
He said the move was taken in response to crimes including drug trafficking and human trafficking in and around the Rohingya camps. Law enforcement agencies are investigating such incidents, while CCTV surveillance will be expanded to cover various areas inside the camps.
The government also plans to strengthen security infrastructure around the camps, including surveillance and other measures to curb crime.
On Rohingya repatriation, Salahuddin Ahmed said it is possible with the leadership of the United Nations and assistance from international organisations.
“Rohingya repatriation is possible. Their return is possible under UN leadership with the support of various international organisations,” he said.
