Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to move his official residence to the State Guest House Jamuna following the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. Before the transition, the head of government will host a formal ceremony at the venue to exchange Eid greetings with citizens and dignitaries.
The Public Works Department (PWD) confirmed that the building is undergoing routine maintenance rather than major renovations. "We are performing standard cleaning, painting, and minor ceiling repairs," said Khalequzzaman Chowdhury, Chief Engineer of the PWD. He noted that all work is expected to be completed within two weeks.
The move follows the permanent transformation of Ganabhaban—the former official residence—into the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum. The site was reclaimed by the public during the August uprising, leading the government to preserve it as a monument to the movement.
During the interim period, authorities considered the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and Agargaon as potential residential sites. However, due to time constraints and logistical readiness, Jamuna was ultimately selected.
Located at 30 Hare Road, the Jamuna complex spans approximately 8 acres. The shift is expected to significantly improve the Prime Minister's daily commute. Currently traveling from Gulshan, the Prime Minister faces heavy traffic to reach the Secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office. Jamuna’s central location will provide a much more efficient route to these key administrative hubs.
The Prime Minister has already utilized the venue recently, hosting two Iftar programs for hundreds of local and international guests.
