Prime Minister’s Eid gifts were distributed among the sanitation workers of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) on Tuesday. Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain handed over the gifts as the chief guest at a ceremony held at the Kazir Deuri International Convention Center.
This year, 3,270 CCC sanitation workers are each receiving Tk 5,000. These funds were previously handed over to the mayors and administrators of 12 city corporations at the National Parliament Secretariat last Sunday.
During the event, Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain described the workers as the "driving force" behind the city’s cleanliness. "The Prime Minister’s gift is a recognition of those who work tirelessly to keep our city livable. This initiative will significantly boost their morale," the Mayor stated, adding that their role is vital in transforming Chittagong into a 'Clean City.'
The Mayor noted that cleanliness efforts have improved since he took office, specifically highlighting the success of night-time waste removal. However, he issued a stern warning regarding safety, urging staff to prevent waste from falling onto roads and to avoid speeding during transport. He also emphasized the mandatory use of uniforms and protective gear.
Outlining future waste management plans, Dr. Shahadat announced initiatives for recycling, biogas, green diesel, and electricity generation. Furthermore, he revealed that door-to-door waste collection—previously halted due to costs—will be resumed entirely free of charge under the CCC’s own management.
The ceremony was attended by former Chittagong Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar, Acting CEO Md. Ashraful Amin, Chief Cleaning Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, and other senior CCC officials.
