Police have arrested notorious kidnapper Md Sajjad Hossain Babu 26, known as "Dim Babu" during a special operation to curb crime in Cox's Bazar city.
He was arrested Friday night from the Jambur More area. At least eight cases are pending against him for kidnapping, offences under the Speedy Trial Act and weapons charges. Babu is the son of the late Ayub Ali of Tarabonia's Chhara area.
According to police, Babu had long been holding pedestrians, tourists and ordinary residents hostage at various points in the city, creating widespread panic through his gang's activities. Acting on intelligence, a team led by Sub-Inspector Suman Chandra Sarkar of Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station confirmed his location and carried out the arrest.
Legal proceedings are ongoing regarding both the new case and his previous eight cases. Following his arrest Babu was presented in court which rejected his bail and sent him to jail.
Local residents and business owners have expressed relief following the arrest of the notorious criminal.
