Argentine forward Julian Alvarez delivered both a winning goal and a public apology on Saturday, securing a 1-0 victory for Atletico Madrid over Deportivo La Coruna while seeking forgiveness for previous comments about wanting to join Barcelona.
Alvarez scored for the second consecutive match, pushing second-placed Atletico to 25 points in LaLiga just two points behind leaders Barcelona. Following his performance, the striker directly addressed the controversy that had strained his relationship with the club’s supporters.
"I’d like to apologise to our fans for what I said at the World Cup; it was a mistake in terms of how I said it and the timing" Alvarez told Movistar Plus. "I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I’d be angry too, especially given how they’ve supported me since I arrived."
The tension originated during the 2026 World Cup when Alvarez publicly expressed a desire to play for Barcelona, triggering a summer transfer standoff after Atletico refused to sell him to their domestic rivals.
Although frequently booed at the Metropolitano Stadium early this season, Alvarez earned a standing ovation from home fans after Saturday's winner. He added that he hopes to fully repair the relationship through hard work, humility and continued strong performances on the pitch.
