Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has openly criticized the club's hierarchy following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday also deepening the crisis surrounding the team.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match in Madrid, Martinez questioned the club’s transfer strategy despite a $213 million summer spending spree on players including Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos under Technical Director Jason Wilcox.
"I expect more from our technical director" Martinez said. "We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top to bring more players to compete, When you make a strong squad, you need to be ready for this kind of night."
Addressing the broader issues within the club, Martinez defended manager Michael Carrick pointing the blame higher up. "You start changing, changing, changing manager. But what about other areas? I can’t say more" he added.
Early goals from Pablo Barrios in the first minute and Ademola Lookman in the second half sealed the victory for Atletico Madrid. The loss extended United's winless streak to five matches across all competitions. Manchester United currently sit 13th in the Premier League table with only one league win so far this season.
