Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will formally inaugurate the national ‘Farmer Card’ distribution program on Pahela Boishakh (April 14). The Prime Minister is scheduled to personally distribute the cards among farmers in Tangail Sadar Upazila on the inaugural day.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting of the Farmer Card Formulation Cell, chaired by the Prime Minister at the Cabinet Division on Tuesday afternoon. Following the session, the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon, briefed the media on the rollout plan.
The initiative is a key fulfillment of the government’s election pledges. In its first phase, the program will launch simultaneously in 11 upazilas, including Tangail Sadar.
Approximately 21,500 farmers will receive immediate financial assistance via mobile banking.
The card is strictly designated for landless, marginal, and small-scale farmers, as well as ranchers within the agriculture, fisheries, and livestock sectors.
Cardholders will receive an annual incentive of 2,500 taka specifically for purchasing essential inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and animal feed.
The ‘Farmer Card’ will function as a banking debit card, integrating modern technology to manage and store agricultural data. Officials noted that the card will serve as a reliable identity for farmers, ensuring transparency in the distribution of government subsidies and loan facilities.
