BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid tribute to party founder Ziaur Rahman and former chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday also marking BNP's 48th founding anniversary.
Tarique, son of the two BNP stalwarts placed wreaths at their graves in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 9:20am with offered fateha and joined a munajat for their souls. Senior BNP leaders including Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Salahuddin Ahmed were present.
The party flag was hoisted at BNP's Nayapaltan office and other party offices nationwide in the morning. BNP and its associate bodies are holding events across the country to mark the day.
Ziaur Rahman founded BNP on September 1, 1978 at Ramna Restaurant in Dhaka with a 19-point programme for a self-reliant Bangladesh. He led the party followed by Khaleda Zia and now Tarique Rahman.
This year's anniversary is significant and it is BNP's first since returning to power under Tarique and the first without Khaleda Zia who died on December 30, 2025.
BNP has announced a five-day programme including a central discussion, district and upazila-level events, tree plantation and fish-release drives. Posters and newspaper supplements have also been published to mark the occasion.
Tarique and Rizvi issued separate messages greeting party leaders, activists and well-wishers on the anniversary.
