Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today invited Japanese conglomerate Marubeni Corporation to expand its investments in Bangladesh's information technology, fertiliser and energy sectors.
The invitation was extended when a high-level delegation led by Marubeni President and CEO Masayuki Omoto paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at the Bangladesh Secretariat. During the meeting, the Premier highlighted Bangladesh's economic potential and longstanding trade ties with Marubeni, emphasizing the need to broaden cooperation into new industries.
Discussions focused on investment opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, data centres and energy infrastructure. Both sides explored establishing an AI-powered data centre within the next 12 months alongside integrating AI technologies into agricultural production.
On fertiliser production, PM Rahman proposed establishing a second Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) plant to boost domestic supply. Marubeni expressed keen interest in expanding its existing presence and supporting technical cooperation.
The Premier noted that upskilling local engineering graduates in IT and cybersecurity could position Bangladesh as a competitive global service hub. Both sides expressed confidence that the upcoming Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between Bangladesh and Japan will further strengthen bilateral trade and investment.
