Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has touched down in New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and this time the approach is refreshingly different. Breaking away from the old culture of massive entourages and extended foreign tours also the PM is keeping this trip strictly business.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s delegation has faced questions about whether Prime Minister could meet US President Donald Trump separately during the visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
According to PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin briefed the press at the Hyatt Grand Central on Monday night, this is a highly focused four-working-day visit. The official delegation has been trimmed down to just 35 people accompanied only by essential security, media staff and the PM's wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman.
So, what's on the agenda? Amin made it clear that the domestic politics is taking a back seat. The PM is taking the people's mandate to the global stage. He will lay out Bangladesh’s future vision, defend our national interests and push for inclusive development. Stepping up as the elected head of government also he is carrying forward the legacy of his parents former President Ziaur Rahman and former PM Khaleda Zia by championing Bangladesh's rights internationally.
US President had already expressed his interest in meeting with Tarique Rahman, he said, referring to a letter the US president sent to the prime minister.
The Prime Minister hits the ground running on Tuesday. He kicks things off with a welcome breakfast hosted by the UN Secretary-General and followed immediately by the UNGA opening session. He is slated to deliver his main address to the assembly on Thursday.
Top officials including PM’s Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman were also at the briefing. The message they’re sending back home is clear and this trip isn't about pomp and ceremony. It’s about making every single minute count for Bangladesh on the world stage.
