Comedian Russell Brand is likely to face further allegations as more victims come forward following his recent rape conviction, London’s Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley stated on Friday.
The 51-year-old former comedian and Hollywood actor faces a lengthy prison sentence after a London court convicted him on Thursday of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others.
Speaking to the BBC the Commissioner Rowley explained that high-profile convictions often encourage previously silent victims to report crimes.
"I clearly wouldn't be surprised if many more came forward" Rowley said with emphasizing that successful prosecutions give survivors the confidence that they will be believed.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham praised the victims for their courage, calling Brand's crimes "horrific" and stating that he had rightly been held accountable.
Brand stands among the most prominent British public figures convicted of sex offenses in recent years. Police confirmed he remains under investigation for two additional alleged rapes including one involving a 16-year-old girl.
Sentencing for Brand is scheduled for Monday.
