A young man was killed and at least three others were critically injured after a sand-laden dump truck crashed into an auto-rickshaw on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway in Kaliganj upazila on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Biplob Mia son of Rabbani Mia hailing from the Rudreshwar area near Kakina Obdabazar.
According to local sources and police, Biplob and several other young men were returning home aboard an auto-rickshaw after watching a football match at the Namuri High School grounds. As the vehicle reached the South Gopal Roy area, a speeding sand-laden dump truck traveling from the opposite direction struck it head-on.
Biplob died on the spot from the impact. Local residents rushed to the scene and rescued the three injured passengers also transferred them to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Kaliganj Police Station confirmed that officers recovered both vehicles involved in the collision and that legal proceedings regarding the incident are underway.
