Bangladesh Pledges to Halve Road Traffic Deaths by 2030

Bangladesh plans to cut road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030, according to Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam. Speaking Monday at a United Nations High-Level Meeting in New York the minister outlined the country's ongoing legal policy and technological reforms to make roads safer.

Key initiatives include deploying AI-based speed management improving post-crash emergency responses and creating targeted safety interventions for highway pedestrians. Furthermore Alam announced a commitment to enact a comprehensive Road Safety Law by December 2027 based on a safe system approach and international best practices.

Achieving the 2030 target will require strong political will effective partnerships and shared responsibility the minister noted. Alam led a national delegation that included senior officials from the Road Transport and Highways Division the Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN and the Bangladesh Road Safety Project.
