The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested three members of an organized gang in connection with the drugging, murder and robbery of an e-bike driver in Faridpur.
PBI Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Rabiul Islam announced the details during a press conference at the district PBI office on Friday.
According to the PBI on the night of July 16, 2022, a five-member gang hired an e-bike driven by Bishwanath Sarkar from the city's Goalchamat old bus stand, heading toward Talma. Upon reaching the Bakhunda area on the Faridpur-Barishal highway, the suspects rendered Sarkar unconscious using a sedative-laced handkerchief, abandoned him on the roadside, and fled with the vehicle.
Locals rescued the driver and rushed him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where he died the following morning. The victim’s son Rabi Kumar Sarkar subsequently filed a murder and robbery case at Kotwali Police Station.
The PBI took over the investigation three months later. Tracking a key lead involving the stolen e-bike's canopy found at a local garage, investigators initially arrested garage owner Kamal and suspect Suman Ahmed both of whom were sent to jail.
On Wednesday night investigators arrested a third key suspect, Murad Sheikh (son of Siraj Sheikh from Bhanga upazila) in the city’s Folpotti area. Murad was presented in court the following day where he gave a confessional statement detailing the crime.
SP Rabiul Islam confirmed that drives are ongoing to arrest the remaining two members of the gang.
