Argentina great Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football.

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football and bringing an end to a glittering 20-year career with Argentina. The 39-year-old shared the news on Instagram on Monday, shortly after leading his nation to the 2026 World Cup final where they suffered an extra-time defeat to Spain in New Jersey.

Messi revealed he penned his retirement letter on 21 July, just days after the final. However, he delayed the public announcement due to the declining health of his father, Jorge Messi who passed away on 8 August in Rosario.

"It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deeply but I understand that the time has come" Messi wrote. "I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football."

The record eight-time Ballon d'Or winner departs as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals. In his record-tying sixth World Cup this year, he played all eight matches and scored eight goals with finishing just one behind the tournament’s top scorer Kylian Mbappé. Messi confirmed he will continue his club career with Inter Miami where he recently scored four times in a single match.

His international departure marks the conclusion of one of football’s greatest narratives of perseverance. For years, Messi’s relationship with the national team was defined by agonising near-misses, including a final defeat in the 2014 World Cup and consecutive Copa America heartbreaks in 2015 and 2016.

However, under manager Lionel Scaloni the narrative shifted. Surrounded by a balanced team that amplified his genius, Messi guided Argentina to the 2021 Copa America title his first major senior international trophy. He reached the absolute pinnacle 18 months later in Qatar also lifting the 2022 World Cup and stepping firmly out of Diego Maradona's immense shadow. Another Copa America triumph followed in 2024.

Adapting his once-explosive pace into calculated brilliance Messi evolved his game for his final World Cup campaign. While the narrow loss to Spain denied him a fairy-tale farewell and his legacy remains untouched.

Messi leaves the international stage having repaired a once-complicated relationship with his homeland also transforming from a scrutinised prodigy into Argentina’s undisputed hero.
