A female student of the Bangla Department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) has been found dead in an apparent suicide at her residence in the Ghonapara area of the town.

The deceased, identified as Deepa Das, was a student of the 2020–21 academic session. The incident occurred on Monday (March 16) at around 4:00 PM.

According to preliminary information, Deepa reportedly had an argument with her husband earlier in the afternoon over various family matters. Following the altercation, she allegedly locked her husband inside one room and went into an adjacent room, where she hanged herself from a ceiling fan.

Later, her husband, with the help of the house caretaker, broke open the door and entered the room, where she was found hanging.

Classmates of the deceased expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident. One of her peers, Jervas Biswas, said, “We have not yet learned all the details surrounding her death. However, we have come to know that she may have taken her own life following a domestic dispute.”

Another classmate, Rifat Islam, described her as “kind, talented, and academically strong,” adding that the news of her death has left the entire Bangla department in mourning.

Attempts to contact Deepa’s family members and her husband for further comments were unsuccessful.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
