Authorities in Nageshwari, Kurigram destroyed illegal Chinese fishing nets worth around Tk 3 lakh on Tuesday, as part of efforts to protect domestic fish resources.
The drive, conducted jointly by the Upazila Administration, Fisheries Department and local police of targeted canals and low-lying wetlands in Nunkhawa Union and the Masliar bilge in Pairadanga area of the municipality. A total of 62 illegal Chinese nets were seized and later burned near the site.
The operation was led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Badruzzaman Rishad and Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Shahadat Hossain.
Rishad said local fish species were being wiped out due to the use of illegal nets, prompting the Deputy Commissioner to order the crackdown. "Today, we recovered 62 illegal Chinese double nets, worth an estimated Tk 3 lakh. Our campaign against illegal nets will continue to protect local fish," he said.
Fisheries Officer Shahadat Hossain said Chinese nets indiscriminately kill fish fry and other aquatic life, disrupting the natural balance of rivers and threatening fish resources. He added that such drives would continue regularly to preserve sustainable fish stocks and protect biodiversity in the area.
