Authorities in Porsha, Naogaon, destroyed 18 illegal fishing ring nets valued at approximately Tk 5 lakh to protect the biodiversity and natural water flow of the Punarbhaba River.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint task force comprising the local Fisheries Office, the Police Department, and the Upazila Administration conducted a drive in the Tektha area of the river on Tuesday. During the operation, they seized the illegal nets, which are known to cause severe damage to local aquatic ecosystems by trapping fish indiscriminately.
The confiscated nets were later burned at the Upazila Parishad premises under the directive of a mobile court before Tuesday evening.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rakibul Islam confirmed the operation, emphasizing the administration's zero-tolerance policy against environmental degradation. He stated that similar drives will continue to safeguard the region's river networks and aquatic life.
