Towhid Hridoy scored a magnificent double century to drag Bangladesh back into contention on the third day of the second Test against West Indies at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
With an unbeaten 200, the 24-year-old became only the fourth Bangladeshi batter to achieve a Test double century with joining Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan. Playing in just his third Test, Hridoy walked in with Bangladesh reeling at 22-2 and mounted a heroic rescue act.
Resuming on 100 at lunch, Hridoy launched an aggressive assault against the West Indian attack with smashing six sixes alongside numerous boundaries. He broke the record for the highest individual Test score at Sylhet surpassing Mahmudul Hasan Joy's 171 and registered the highest Test score by a Bangladeshi against West Indies.
Hridoy found crucial support in an 8-wicket partnership with Taijul Islam who scored 22 off 56 balls. The pair added a century stand to bring Bangladesh within 55 runs of West Indies' first-innings total of 356. Earlier the West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican had triggered a top-order collapse with removing Mushfiqur Rahim (34), Litton Das (8) and Hasan Mahmud (1).
Despite suffering a blow to the ribs from a Jayden Seales bouncer, Hridoy skillfully farmed the strike and shepherded the tail, completing his historic milestone by pushing a delivery to long-on to capping off a memorable marathon innings.
