The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has urged citizens not to circulate unverified allegations against law enforcement on social media without verifying the facts.
The appeal follows a Facebook post featuring a photograph of a woman named Shreemoyee Rita Rani and claiming she was assaulted by a local political activist in Mirpur and that police refused to register her complaint.
In a press release issued on Saturday, DMP clarified that an initial inquiry by its Mirpur Division found no record of any such complaint or case across all seven police stations under its jurisdiction. Furthermore the authorities found no record of the woman visiting any Mirpur police station.
Signed by Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of DMP's Media and Public Relations Division also the statement added that police are investigating the authenticity of the photograph and working to establish the woman's identity.
DMP requested anyone with reliable information regarding Shreemoyee Rita Rani or the alleged incident to contact the Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station or the Deputy Commissioner of the Mirpur Division.
Reiterating its commitment to public safety and law enforcement the DMP urged the public to act responsibly on social media and support impartial investigations.
