The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has unveiled a plan to raise nearly Tk.990 billion in additional VAT revenue in FY27 also mainly by closing compliance gaps and cracking down on evasion.

The strategy was presented Monday at an NBR meeting chaired by NBR Chairman Ahsan Habib with Prime Minister's Adviser Dr Rashid Al Mahmud Titumir attending as chief guest. NBR Member Syed Musfequr Rahman outlined the plan to meet the VAT Wing's Tk.2.57 trillion target.

The single largest gain Tk.380 billion will come from tightening oversight of about 10,000 high-risk businesses with importers, real estate firms, manufacturers and e-commerce companies with monthly transactions above Tk.1 million. Of these, 8,000 firms with weak compliance records could yield Tk.250 billion while scrutiny of 2,000 large taxpayers is expected to add another Tk.100 billion.

An NBR official said many registered businesses show serious compliance gaps with real estate a key concern. The NBR has already found around Tk.7 billion in unpaid VAT from one major property firm and has formed a dedicated team to probe the sector further.

Other revenue sources include Tk.120 billion from tobacco products of Tk.200 billion from projected economic growth of Tk.150 billion from higher development spending, and Tk.140 billion from arrears recovery.

Overall the NBR has been set a record revenue target of Tk.6.04 trillion for FY27 47 percent higher than last year also the largest jump since independence with the VAT Wing's target up 45 percent.
