Bangladesh's Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus has been indexed in a group of Asian notables recognised by the Britain-based merit-indexing body Impact Hallmarks (IH©) as the 'Century Merit Icons'.
IH© has named 38 individuals the 'The Merit Sovereigns of 21st Century', scored against a 1,000-point framework designed to reward documented achievement over public visibility. Asia is prominently represented in the '1st Merit Hierarchy of 21st-Century'. Around eleven Asian icons appear in the top three of eight of the ten thematic categories, and fifteen more feature in the wider recognition tiers. Nepal's Pushpa Basnet, China's Chen Si and Japan's Yukio Shige jointly secure 3rd place in 'Humanitarianism and Social Justice', while from Pakistan, late Bilquis Edhi tops the Legacy Memorial category and Arch-polymath Prof Aurangzeb Hafi secures a shared first place in 'Scientific Endeavours' category.
Unveiled in the Quarticentennial Merited Impacts Gazette (2000–2025), the list is billed as the first merit-based retrospective of the century's first quarter. From an initial pool of 1.9 million notables across 195 countries, 150 independent assessors shortlisted 187 individuals using the Merited Impact Value (MIV) framework. It weighs documentary evidence, systemic transformation and public resonance across four dimensions: Humanitarian Impact Merit (HIM), Scientific Impact Merit (SIM), Resilience Impact Merit (RIM) and Cumulative Impact Merit (CIM). A global online poll served as a public validation layer. "We are neither measuring the volume of a crowd, nor its noise… We are mapping, instead, the rectitude of merit to provide a new moral compass for the rest of the 21st century," said the IH© Secretariat of Assessors.
Described by IH as the 'Arch-Polymath of 21st Century', Prof Aurangzeb Hafi is recognised in three categories. In 'Scientific Endeavours', he shares first place with physicist Dr Fritjof Capra (US) on 950+ points. He was cited for integrating the scientific pentarchy, identifying the alarming mega-toxification of underground water reserves caused by prevailing sewage-drainage practices in underdeveloped countries, for developing the 'Deca-Archic Phygital Literacy Model' and discovering the phenomenon of Magneto-Hydro-Tropism (MHT). In Multiple Iconicities he is placed at second with 957 points for being a cross-disciplinary 'Arch-researcher', who integrates research across 93 epistemic subject-fields, behind James Harrison (Australia—965) and ahead of Nathan Myhrvold (US—945). In Paradigm-Trailblazing Icons he placed third with 910 points, behind King Charles III (930) and physicist John Preskill (US—925). Bilquis Edhi (Pakistan—965) leads the posthumous Legacy Memorial category for her Jhoola project, which provided shelter and medical care to abandoned infants. Peter Higgs (UK—950) and Kofi Annan (Ghana—930) complete the top three. In Humanitarianism and Social Justice, three Asians share third place on 930+ points. Yukio Shige (Japan), known as the 'Chotto Matte' ('wait a moment' man), leads volunteers credited with saving more than 750 people from suicide at the Tōjinbō cliffs. Chen Si (China) also prevented hundreds of suicides. Pushpa Basnet (Nepal) founded organisations rescuing children who would otherwise grow up in prison with incarcerated parents. In Scientific Endeavours, Fields Medalist Shing-Tung Yau (China) and H.E. Dr Mohamed Al-Kuwaiti (UAE) share second place on 920+ with Noam Chomsky and Dana Bolles (both US). Cosmologist Prof. Chandra Wickramasinghe (Sri Lanka) is third on 910. Ghanim Al-Muftah (Qatar—939) places second in Luminary and Differently-Able Icons, behind Nick Vujicic (Australia/US—940). Siti Atikoh Supriyanti (Indonesia—907), recognised for community-centred public health advocacy, features in Dignified Asceticism. Bana Al-Abed (Syria—905), whose social media dispatches from besieged Aleppo drew international attention, is third among Young Trailblazing Icons.
The overall topper of the Gazette is Stephen Soldz (US—967), who leads Humanitarianism and Social Justice for documenting psychological coercion tactics used against war prisoners. He was the first ethicist to make academic condemnation of employing the sacred religious texts as an instrument of torture. "The epoch-making, sacrosanct codex given by Stephen Soldz stands as the 'Magna Carta' of ethics, human inviolability, and moral preservation against the depths of dehumanising cruelty", said assessors at IH©. Francesca Albanese (Italy) and Graça Machel (Mozambique) share second on 940+ points. Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, is recognised for her 2024 report "Anatomy of Genocide" and for facing sanctions over her work, while Machel is recognised for providing baselines for the UN's revolutionary research work on the effects of war on children. Pope Francis (Vatican City—940) leads Resilience, Endurance and Nature-Centricity, followed by Capra (935) and Greta Thunberg (Sweden-933). Greta Thunberg is recognised for the arc running from her solitary school strike movement to leading the high-risk flotilla missions carrying aid toward Gaza including the Freedom Flotilla in June 2025 and the 44-nation Global Sumud Flotilla in September 2025, the interception of which led to 450 activists being detained, and sparked protests across three continents. Tarja Halonen (Finland—920), Machel and Jacinda Ardern (New Zealand) lead Dignified Asceticism. Usain Bolt (Jamaica—905), LeBron James (US—903) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal—902) top Athletics and Physical Excellence. Orion Jean (US—935) and Greta Thunberg (920) head the Young Trailblazing Icons.
The wider-significance tiers add fifteen more Asians including Indian notables at a dominant place. These enlistees titled 'Quarticentennial Meritocrats of the Planet' include Prof. Yanghee Lee (South Korea), Dr Amjad Saqib and Dr Ruth Pfau (Pakistan), Prof. M. Yunus (Bangladesh), Kailash Satyarthi (India) and Maung Zarni (Myanmar). The others titled 'Quarticentennial Impactpreneurs' include Nitesh Jangir, Arunima Sinha, Dr Fathima Benazir J. (India), Dr Asha de Vos, Dr Jehan Perera and Deshamanya Dr A.T. Ariyaratne (Sri Lanka). They also include Pakistan's Parveen Saeed, Ghulam Bishar Hafi and Ubaidah Al-Fiddhah Hafiah.
Francesca Albanese is also included in a special tier termed as the 'Quarticentennial Merit Vanguards', dedicated for those who provided research baselines for several epoch-making UN constitutive documentation, alongside François Englert, Takaaki Kajita, Arthur B. McDonald, Dr. John C. Mather, Dr. René Doyon, Dr. George Rieke, Dr. Gillian Wright, Johan Vigne, Katherine Cocco and Brigid Kennedy Pfister, Graça Machel, Melanie O'Brien and Muang Zarni with a landmark entry in this high calibre tier.
Pakistan's Dr Amjad Saqib, Sri Lanka's Jehan Perera, India's Arunima Sinha and the two young Pakistani siblings Fiddhah Hafiah and Ghulam Bishar Hafi are jointly heralded as the 'Five-pointed Asian Star'.
The results form part of the 'Sovereign Sesquicentennial Confluence of Intellect & Impact' (2026). This single declaration consolidates three commemorations: the Quarticentennial Closing of the 21st Century's First Epoch (2000–2025), the Sesquicentennial of the U.S. Postdoctoral Framework (1876–2026) and the Inter-Continental Sesquicentennial of Transnational Research (1875–2025). It was timed to coincide with National Postdoc Appreciation Week and Global Post-Doctoral Appreciation Week (September 21–25, 2026), in place of separate regional observances. Under the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA-US) and the Asia-Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia's Inter-Continental Chancellery (AOPDA-ICC), the observances were led by Thomas P. Kimbis, J.D., Executive Director and CEO of NPA-US, and Justice (R) Dr S. S. Paru, LL.D., Chief of the Chancellery, AOPDA-ICC. The postdoctoral community endorsed the work of the Gazette's enlistees, the registry of Sovereign Iconoclastic Polymaths and the Sesquicentennial Compendium of the 'Sovereign Catalysts of Renaissance'.
"The Quarticentennial Merit Hierarchy is neither an alternative nor an addition to the trophy cabinet of contemporary honorification culture. It is a principled departure from the transient 'Glow of Fame' towards the enduring 'Light of Merit,'" IH© said.
Full results would be archived in the Quarticentennial Merited Impacts Gazette, alongside the Quarticentennial Roll of Honour (HI©) to be published in due course.
