The Upazila Fisheries Department in Kalia, Narail, has seized approximately 15,000 meters of illegal fishing nets during a special operation aimed at ensuring safe breeding grounds for mother Hilsa and conserving the river's aquatic resources.
The seized nets were subsequently destroyed by fire in a public setting.
The operation took place on Sunday (October 25) between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, covering the area along the Nabaganga River—from the Kanchanpur ferry terminal (kheyaghat) to Madhabpasha.
Conducted under the 'Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2026' initiative by the Upazila Fisheries Department, the operation was supported by personnel from the Kalia Police Station.
According to the Upazila Fisheries Department, the operation was carried out to curb the use of illegal nets during the Hilsa breeding season, ensure the free movement of fish, and protect the environment necessary for reproduction. Twelve illegal 'current' nets, totaling approximately 15,000 meters in length, were recovered from various locations along the Nabaganga River.
Following the operation, the seized nets were destroyed by fire in the presence of Kalia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Jinnatul Islam and Upazila Fisheries Officer Chayan Biswas at the Baraipara ferry terminal.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Jinnatul Islam emphasized the need for public awareness regarding the protection of river biodiversity, the enhancement of fish production, and the conservation of aquatic resources for future generations. He noted that such operations by the Fisheries Department play a crucial role in protecting mother Hilsa.
He further added that regular monitoring and enforcement operations are being conducted to safeguard aquatic resources, and that the cooperation of all stakeholders—including the fishing community—is essential for the success of these efforts.
