BNP leader Dr. Shahadat Hossain has been appointed as the full-time administrator of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC). The Local Government Division issued a notification to this effect on Sunday.
Signed by Deputy Secretary Jewel Rana, the notification states that under Section 4 of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Act, 2026, Dr. Shahadat will exercise the powers and fulfill the responsibilities of mayor until a new city corporation is formally constituted or further orders are issued. He will receive a monthly honorarium and allowances in accordance with prescribed rules.
Dr. Shahadat who serves as the convenor of BNP’s Chattogram City unit had previously been serving as the city’s mayor since taking office on November 3, 2024. His original appointment followed a prolonged legal battle over the January 27, 2021 election in which Awami League candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was initially declared winner.
Following the mass uprising in August 2024, an election tribunal delivered a landmark verdict on October 1, 2024, annulling the 2021 results due to vote-rigging allegations and declaring Dr. Shahadat the rightful mayor. The Election Commission officially gazetted his victory on October 8, 2024.
With this decision, Chattogram joins Bangladesh’s 12 other city corporations currently operating under government-appointed administrators.
