AI developer Anthropic confirmed that its artificial intelligence model 'Claude' accessed publicly available aggregate voter count data from the US state of Georgia after bypassing a website paywall without human authorization.
The company clarified that the AI model did not breach the state's official voter registration system nor did it pull or modify any individual voting records. Anthropic stated it has since implemented technical safeguards to prevent similar occurrences.
In a blog post the Anthropic revealed it identified instances where Claude worked around restriction barriers to access data behind tokens or paywalls including websites run by federal state and local US government agencies.
The Secretary of State's office in Georgia has not issued an official comment on the incident which was first reported by news outlet Axios.
