Chennai International Airport experienced one of its most severe aviation disruptions of the year on Sunday, December 7, as IndiGo abruptly cancelled 100 flights in a single day, causing chaos and affecting thousands of passengers.
The 100 cancellations in Chennai are part of a larger crisis, with more than 2,000 IndiGo flights grounded across India since December 1.
The disruptions stem from IndiGo’s severe staffing shortage, which has been worsened by the recent revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules. IndiGo, which operates India's largest flight network, has struggled to roster enough pilots and cabin crew to comply with these new limits.
Inside Chennai International Airport, scenes of anger and exhaustion were evident from early morning, with long queues snaking through the terminal as stranded passengers waited for information.
