Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, 2,790 out of 2,834 factories in Gazipur cleared worker salaries, while 2,816 factories paid out bonuses by Tuesday. Authorities confirmed that the remaining payments will be completed by March 19.
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Md. Amjad Hossain reported that 98.09% of factory salaries and 99.36% of Eid bonuses were distributed by Tuesday evening. Management at the remaining units—44 factories for salaries and 18 for bonuses—have committed to finishing payments between Wednesday and Thursday.
To manage the massive influx of travelers and prevent severe traffic congestion, factory holidays are being phased. According to the police, 62 factories closed on March 16, 444 on March 17, and 1,414 on March 18, with the final 833 scheduled for March 19. While 2,753 factories will close entirely for the holidays, 81 will remain partially operational to meet urgent buyer demands.
As thousands of workers head home, pressure on Gazipur’s highways has surged. Slow-moving traffic and long queues have been reported in key hubs, including Chandana Chowrasta, Tongi Station Road, Chandra, Safipur, Konabari, and Sreepur’s Maona and Jaina Bazar areas.
Gazipur currently houses 2,834 industrial units, including 770 BGMEA, 147 BKMEA, and 136 BTMEA-affiliated factories, alongside 1,781 subcontracting and other small-scale plants.
