The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained a man believed to be the owner of the motorcycle used in the shooting attack on Sharif Osman bin Hadi, the Dhaka-8 hopeful and Inqilab Moncho Convenor. The suspect, identified as Abdul Hannan, was handed over to Paltan Police Station, though no case has yet been filed over the incident.
Sharif Osman bin Hadi was shot on Friday around 2:15 pm near the Bijoynagar Water Tank in Dhaka. The assailant, riding pillion on a moving motorcycle, fired at Hadi as he was traveling in an autorickshaw, striking him in the head.
Hadi was returning from a campaign lunch at Suhrawardy Udyan after a mosque visit in Motijheel. He was an independent candidate for the parliamentary election from the Dhaka-8 constituency (Motijheel, Shahjahanpur, Paltan, Ramna, Shahbagh).
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) detained Abdul Hannan, who they identify as the owner of the motorcycle used in the attack. Hannan was brought to Paltan Police Station on Monday morning.
Deputy Commissioner Harun Ur Rashid of the Motijheel Division confirmed the detention but noted that a case has yet to be filed regarding the shooting itself.
Hadi was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for surgery and later transferred to Evercare Hospital. Surgeons believe the bullet exited his skull. He is currently reported to be in "critical condition."
DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali had previously vowed to "quickly" bring the perpetrators to justice, stating on Saturday that they were hunting the prime suspect. Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced a reward of Tk 5 million for information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s).
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have released a photo of a suspected attacker and requested public cooperation for information.
