Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has alleged that many mega projects in the country have failed to benefit ordinary people, especially those in rural areas.
He made the remarks on Tuesday (March 24) while attending a prayer meeting marking the joining of the new administrator of Lakshmipur Zilla Parishad.
Anee said some projects were unnecessary, while others saw inflated costs. “Projects worth Tk1,000 crore were executed at Tk10,000 crore, leading to massive corruption,” he claimed.
He also raised concerns over financial instability in the banking sector, stating that Tk15 crore of Lakshmipur Zilla Parishad funds remain stuck in a bank. According to him, several banks are facing difficulties due to alleged looting and money laundering.
The minister stressed that corruption must not be tolerated in any government office, including local government bodies and administrative institutions. He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in corruption, regardless of political affiliation.
Calling for cooperation, Anee said the government is facing challenging conditions and requires collective efforts to overcome them.
The event was chaired by Lakshmipur Zilla Parishad Administrator Sahab Uddin Sabu and attended by local political leaders and officials.
