The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has raised Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 at all four seaports Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra after a low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression.
According to a weather warning bulletin issued on Saturday, gusty winds are expected to sweep across the seaports, the northern Bay and adjoining coastal regions. The deep depression is currently positioned over the northwestern Bay and the north Odisha-West Bengal coast.
All fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal have been strongly advised to stay close to the coast and navigate with extreme caution until further notice.
Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir stated that while the system is expected to cross the West Bengal-Odisha coast, Bangladesh will experience its effects through increased rainfall and gusty winds due to a steep pressure gradient. He confirmed there is no threat of a severe storm hitting the country directly, as the system is unlikely to intensify further.
Over the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are expected across many parts of the Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with moderately heavy to heavy downpours likely in some areas.
Scattered rain is also forecast for the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Barishal, Dhaka and Khulna divisions, which may help ease the mild heatwave currently sweeping through districts like Rajshahi, Pabna and Chuadanga.
