Barrister AKM Kamruzzaman Zaman, personal legal advisor to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and former vice-president of UK BNP, has launched a grassroots campaign in the Dinajpur-5 (Phulbari-Parbatipur) constituency to unify local party ranks.
During a week-long series of post-Eid worker rallies that began on June 13, Zaman called on leaders and activists to move past internal divisions, rebuild organizational strength, and prepare for upcoming local government elections.
“Our party’s greatest strength is unity,” he told supporters. “We must rise above personal grudges and narrow-mindedness. Only a united BNP can succeed in our ongoing political struggle to establish people's rights.”
According to party sources, Zaman exchanged views with activists across 10 unions in Parbatipur upazila, seven unions in Phulbari upazila, and two local municipalities.
He urged the grassroots to stop dwelling on past election setbacks and instead focus on securing victories for BNP-backed candidates in local elections. He assured workers that their sacrifices would be recognized. “Those who have spent the last 17 years on the streets enduring oppression will not be forgotten,” Zaman said. “Future leadership will not be decided by individual influence, but by organizational skills, dedication, and public support.”
The campaign marks a significant return for Zaman. Following his defeat as the BNP's nominated candidate for Dinajpur-5 in the previous national parliament election, Zaman returned to his legal practice in the UK. His absence, combined with factional disputes involving an expelled BNP leader who ran independently, had left local activists feeling cornered and disorganized.
Since returning to his constituency on June 12, his direct engagement has reinvigorated the local base.
Phulbari Upazila BNP President and former Upazila Chairman, Principal Khurshid Alam Moti, welcomed the initiative. “After a long time, our grassroots workers feel encouraged by direct communication from a central-level leader. We are hopeful this will bring new momentum to our organizational activities,” he said.
Concluding his rallies, Zaman left a clear directive for his supporters: “We must fly the flag of unity, not division. We must strengthen the party, not individuals.”
