A special session of the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) will be convened to elect Bangladesh's next president Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni announced on Friday.

While Moni confirmed that the session would be brief he did not specify the exact date it will commence.

The announcement comes a day after the Election Commission (EC) unveiled the official schedule for the presidential election. According to the timetable voting is set for 20 August 2026 [1]. However a formal ballot will not be required if only one valid candidate remains in the race.

Under the EC’s schedule the deadline for submitting nomination papers is 13 August 2026 [1]. This means the country’s next president could be known as early as next Thursday if only a single nomination is filed. The Election Commission will complete the scrutiny of nomination papers on 16 August declaring any uncontested candidate elected on that day .

The presidential election was scheduled following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on 24 July 2026.
