An arson attempt occurred early Thursday at the Chittagong family residence of former Education Minister and Awami League leader Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel.
At approximately 2:00 a.m. on August 6 unidentified individuals targeted the empty house in the Chashmahil area. Panchlaish Police Station OC Mohammad Jahedul Islam confirmed that CCTV footage showed seven youths attempting to set the property on fire. They successfully ignited a pipeline in front of the house but fled when local residents quickly intervened. While police noted the pipeline fire Nowfel’s brother alleged the attackers threw a petrol bomb.
Fire service and police personnel promptly arrived to bring the flames under control, preventing structural damage. Additional security forces have since been deployed to secure the neighborhood.
Local sources suspect the attack was a direct reaction to Nowfel’s reported attendance at a press conference held by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India on August 5. The Chashmahil residence has remained vacant for over a year having faced multiple attacks following the July uprising and throughout the interim government's tenure.
